Delusions, Expectations and Travelling with the Dhamma, this Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Alameda Sangha

Dear Ones,

Delusion and expectation go hand and hand as clinging to certain outcomes arie and self created assumptions are established. Delusion is one of the 3 Poisons that the Buddha taught about - greed, hatred and delusion.

Join me this Sunday in "killing two birds with one stone" to hear about my recent travels and how the dhamma showed up for some rich but sobering insights.

Reminder: We will be having Ayya Sobhana visiting us on November 2nd. If there are any requests for a teaching that you would like to hear about, please email me and I will pass them on to her.

Thank you once again, one and all for all your help and wonderful energy at the daylong last Saturday. We are truly a sangha that works well together to help us all nurture ourselves and each other! The Buddha would have been proud of our lay community!

with metta and gratitude for your practice,

This Sunday: Anatta Part 2: Joy Shines Through

Dear Friends,

This week, Sept. 21st, I'll once again be speaking about Anatta. Last week, we covered the basics of the Buddha's teachings on not-self, emptiness or anatta. This week I'll be exploring the implications of anatta, and what happens when we are able to let go--even a little bit--of clinging to things as "I" or "mine."

Anatta is really at the core of our ability to be joyous and spacious, to relate to beauty, and to touch the states of freedom that are always within reach. It is also at the base of what allows us to find an appropriate response to the present moment, however it is. Cultivating deeper and deeper realization of anatta is central to the path of awakening.

Bring your questions from our discussion last week, and let's dive in more deeply.
with warmth,

Deb Kerr

This Sunday: Anatta and Emptiness

Dear Friends,

Who are you, really? This Sunday Sept. 14th I'll be talking about the third characteristic of existence--anatta, or not-self. This is frequently taken to mean "I don't exist" but it is not at all that black and white. Not-self and emptiness are closely linked in the Buddhist teachings, so we will be exploring emptiness as well, to see what light it can shed on the doctrine of not-self. The bottom line of all this is that we can learn to take things less personally (even our-selves), and by relaxing our often limiting identities, begin to find freedom.

Very much looking forward to practicing with you on Sunday.

with blessings,

Sun 7-8:30 pm The Nature of Perception

Dear Friends,

Last week I talked about how the mindset with which we meet new experience can determine if it appears to be good or bad fortune. This Sunday I'll take a closer look at how that happens. Understanding this process can liberate us from being at its mercy, and from the attachment to it that causes so much distress, or dukkha.

If you've been thinking about situations you've labeled either "good" or "bad," bring those stories this Sunday, 7-8:30 pm, and we'll explore how we can either be enslaved by old mental patterns, or set free.

See you there,
