Sunday, April 29, 2012 - The Tendency to Compare

Hi everyone,

A couple of announcements first: 1) This is the last weekend to buy tickets for the church's bazaar. If you would like to buy a chicken teriyaki dinner for the May 6 event, this is the time. See details below.  2) Monthly yoga was offered last week (just in case you missed it), so although it is usually the last Sunday of the month, there will not be yoga this weekend.

As for the topic: this Sunday we will be discussing the tendency we often have to compare. This is often very closely connected to our sense of identity, and how this identity interacts and relates with the world. So, I'll pick up where we left off last week with the teaching of self/not-self in Buddhism, and then we'll get into the particulars of how this plays out in what is sometimes called, 'the comparing mind'. This is the second of the series of four talks on self and identity in our lives.

May you have a good end of the week, and I hope to see you Sunday evening,
Anthony

This Sunday, April 22, 2012 - Pre-meditation Yoga and Practicing with Not-self

Hi everyone,
The monthly yoga offered by Dina will be held this Sunday, April 22nd. Please come by 6pm and bring your own yoga gear if you have it. Also, remember that the May 6th Sunday group will be held at Island Yoga. (See Alameda Sangha website for that info)

I will be leading the group for the next four Sundays, so I thought I would try to thread the talks together by a common theme. The theme will be working with our personal identity and self in our practice; and by practice I mean both on the meditation cushion and in daily life.

This Sunday, I will present the teaching of not-self, and then talk further about how we can make the concept more of a reality in our practice. One common misperception of this teaching is the belief that it means there is no self, but there are many other misunderstandings. Hopefully, I will address some of these.

If you have time before Sunday, it could be a useful exercise to reflect on your own understanding of the teaching of not-self. Using your response to that reflection, also consider how you have come to this understanding and how it impacts your daily practice.

Hope to see many of you Sunday.
Anthony

Sunday, April 15 - Metta - Lovingkindness Meditation

Hi Everyone,
This week we are fortunate to have Baruch Golden joining us to lead the group.

He will be talking about metta, a Pali word often translated as "lovingkindness". He will be discussing its relevance to practice, life, and how to find an entry into doing the practice. Essentially, he will offer practice tips and guidelines.

I hope that many of you will be able to make it this weekend, and hope you are enjoying the spring,
With metta,
Anthony

Has anyone seen the whereabouts of the folder with chicken teriyaki dinner tickets left last Sunday for Rebecca on the offering plates at church?

Hello Everyone,

May this find you all well.

Jason from the Buena Vista United Methodist Church emailed me and asked about the whereabouts of the folder with the chicken teriyaki dinner tickets I have been trying to sell since I taught on the Sundays, March 18 and 25. Apparently after April 1st, when Rebecca taught, he was unable to locate the folder/envelope by the offering plates where he left them for her to sell. Has anyone seen it or know where it may have been placed? They are still trying to locate it.

The last time I saw it and Jason received it was the last time I taught on March 25th when Sue put it by the offering plates.

Thanks so much for any of your help in this regard. May you all have a peaceful weekend, Pauletta

Sun, April 8, 7-8:30pm Beyond Joy

Dear Friends,

With all its talk about suffering, we can forget that Buddhism is what the Dalai Lama has called, "The Art of Happiness."  This practice is as much about cultivating joy as it is about ending suffering.  Both approaches lead to the same state of the heart and mind... free of suffering and the ordinary limits of happiness.

Please join us this Sunday to ponder what lies beyond the usual range of human emotion... where this path is taking us:  beyond joy.

Warmly,
Rebecca

And don't forget:
